The Rays made their first wave of cuts on Monday, sending a number of players to the minors. None of the players demoted had a legitimate shot at cracking the opening day roster, however, a few could pop up over the season’s duration.
Of those on the 40-man roster, you have to assume Frank De Los Santos and Alex Colome will open the season in Durham. Enny Romero could start a slot lower at Montgomery, and Felipe Rivero one slot below him at Charlotte. The real wild card here is Mike Montgomery, whom the Rays figure to assign to Montgomery or Durham.
On a related note: Neil Allen, the Bulls pitching coach, must feel like the luckiest man in the sport given the high-powered arms he’s worked without in recent years. Allen, you might recall, pronounced, “I’ve got another pheee-nom!” after watching Chris Archer’s first side session in Durham. He should get the chance to say that a few more times this season, as Archer, Colome, Jake Odorizzi, Alex Torres, and perhaps Montgomery could spend significant time at the level.
